The book I wish I had as a new firmware engineer. White writes like she has actually shipped products — covers debugging real hardware, structuring drivers, and the dozen small habits that separate working code from production code.

Eric Bogatin · 3rd ed.

If Johnson is the canon, Bogatin is the textbook. The "simplified" in the title is honest — the explanations are clearer than most graduate SI courses, with measurements to back every claim.

The C Programming Language

Kernighan & Ritchie · 2nd ed.

Still the best language book ever written, in any language. Reads in a long weekend, references for the rest of your career. If you write C and have not read K&R, you are guessing at idioms.

Most embedded codebases have no tests because the team believed it was impossible. Grenning shows the harness pattern that makes it tractable — and the firmware ages dramatically better as a result.

A whole book on pointers sounds excessive until you read it. Every dereference, every cast, every memory bug — covered with the rigor most firmware codebases never received. Stops a class of bugs cold.

Hunt & Thomas · 20th anniversary ed.

Not embedded-specific, but the habits transfer. The chapter on "broken windows" alone has saved more firmware projects than any debugger.
