Replaced a binocular stereo scope for 80% of work. The screen means both hands stay on the board. Solder paste stenciling at 0402 is suddenly comfortable.

Cheap tweezers cost you in dropped 0402 parts. These have ended up in every project box on the bench because they actually align with what you're trying to grab.

Lead trimming after through-hole. They eventually dull and you replace them at $7 — the failure mode is graceful, not catastrophic.
3.3V logic · DTR/RTS broken out
Genuine FTDI, not a clone. The DTR/RTS lines reset ESP/RP2040 boards into bootloader mode reliably. Pay the extra $10; the clones eat enough days that they're never cheaper.

$60 for the most reliable SWD probe under $400. The educational license keeps you off the commercial-grade pricing tier — read the EULA before you ship products with it.

For looking at ripple on a 3V3 rail without burying the signal in the scope's noise floor. The first time you see actual switching artifact instead of "looks clean," it pays for itself.

Logic analyzer probes that actually grip a 0.5mm pin. The flying-lead set that ships with most LAs is fine for breadboards and useless on a real PCB.

The leaded solder that flows like water and sets glassy. Lead-free is for products that ship; leaded is for everything else on a learning bench.
No-clean tacky flux · 10cc syringe
Drag-soldering QFN-32 packages without bridges. A drop on the pads and the solder pulls itself where it belongs. Counterfeit syringes are everywhere — buy direct from a real distributor.
2.5mm braid · rosin-coated
The braid that actually wicks. Cheap braid is dry and pushes solder around instead of pulling it. This pulls.
Anhydrous · pure isopropanol
91% IPA leaves a residue you can taste under the microscope. 99% from a real distributor (not the drugstore) is what flux deserves.

Open-source UI for cheap clones if you can't justify the Saleae Pro yet. Protocol decoders cover I2C/SPI/UART/CAN/1-Wire out of the box.
